1. Excellent announcement: Seattle’s top eco-urbanist  blog, Dan Bertolet’s Hugeasscity, is becoming part of PubliCola.

Bertolet, who works at downtown Seattle urban planning and architecture firm GGLO, has been blogging through his “hugeasscity lens” (a reclamation of Seattle’s “World Class City” obsession?) since 2007, and will now be posting his reports about planning, transportation, the built environment, and climate change right here at PubliCola—as we go huge.

Please welcome Dan Bertolet and watch for his first huge-ass post later today.

2. Here are the names we’re hearing of people who are going to try and get West Seattle-area State Rep. Sharon Nelson’s (D-34) seat when and if she moves to the Senate when and if West Seattle-area State Sen. Joe McDermott (D-34) moves to the King County Council: Joe Fitzgibbon, Rep. Nelson’s legislative assistant; Josh Johnston, the Washington Bus mastermind who worked for King County Council Member Julia Patterson; Tim Nuse, current chair of the 34th; and Sabra Schneider, a computer guru who works for King County Executive Dow Constantine.

2. Seattle-area unemployment rose from 8.4 percent in November to 9.2 percent now. The Seattle Times has all the bad numbers:

“Last year was the worst in recent history for job losses in Washington, the state Employment Security Department confirmed Wednesday: 106,200 jobs, or 3.6 percent of payroll employment here, were eliminated in 2009.

Those figures blow past the recession at the start of the 2000s and the double-dip recession of 1981-82. The last comparable downturn was the “Boeing bust” of 1970, when the state lost 5.3 percent of its payroll jobs, or 58,900 positions in that era’s much smaller economy.”

3. Erica will be a judge at NARAL Pro-Choice Washington’s Chocolate for Choice fundraiser at Safeco Field’s First Base Terrace Club tonight at 7. The event marks the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Morning Fizz is sponsored by Is That Jazz? 2010, Seattle’s avant-jazz music festival.

    @ West Seattle waiter:
    -
Are you aware that you just contradicted yourself at least twice?
    -
First you say "its (sic) actually more democratic and progressive to have a placeholder hold a vacancy then (sic) have open primaries to settle candidates."
    -
That directly contradicts your previous statement "the fact that only about 100 precinct officers get to pick a replacement as opposed to the 15,000 voters who vote in a primary just isn’t democratic."
    -
Here's a clue for you. The PCOs ARE choosing a placeholder. DUH! That person serves only until the next primary election, which if necessary is held in an odd-numbered year, and IS a special election.
    -
So what you are advocating for already exists. Try going to Goodwill or Value Village and buying yourself a nice cheap used clue before you spout nonsense like that.
    -
As for the PCOs making the choice, it's a question of dollars and cents. Special elections cost money, the state isn't about to spend money on a special election when there is a perfectly good appointment system in place. I'd bet most of the taxpayers would agree that for the sake of fiscal responsibility, things should remain as they are.

Josh will be great for the 34th!
  • Supporter
Josh has a passion for public service and would serve the 34th district well. He connects and listens to everyone and trys to find solutions to issues. He would work hard for the 34th.
  • Go JJ
Josh is a straight shooter, fair, reasonable and has a ton of energy. Knows the system and would be great in the 34th!
  • Supporter
I'm hoping Josh Johnston runs. He a class act and perfect for the 34th.

    @ Tim Nuse
the fact that only about 100 precinct officers get to pick a replacement as opposed to the 15,000 voters who vote in a primary just isn't democratic. its a state law that few if any states use to employ vacancies -- almost all other states use special elections. the WA State system is frankly not democratic and representative. its actually more democratic and progressive to have a placeholder hold a vacancy then have open primaries to settle candidates.

the current system is an accident of history and political custom that's time should come to an end. and in this political atmoshphere if it was on the ballot to abolish this practice -- the voters would. let the people vote and decide their elected officials.
  • Hit the ground running
Josh is a great guy. Very smart and passionate. He has a ton of experience working in the legislative process and a deep background of community involvement. He would be able to go to Olympia and hit the ground running.
  • I see Larry Phillips repaid the support he got in the KC PRIMARY, and it did cause Dwight Pelz to cry about it at HorsesAss, political inbreeding makes me want to throw up.

Now Pelz has to work with the unpredictable public involved.
  • @ West Seattle Waiter:

The "nuts" in the 34th District Democrats are some of the most committed people you will ever find. We work tirelessly for better eductation for our children, health care coverage for ALL Americans, energy independence and freedom from fossil fuels, good paying jobs and respect for worker rights, accessibility to parks and open spaces, a clean and thriving natural environment, public safety, and the list goes on.
Our membership has continued to grow every month because we are an effective political organization. Our meetings give easy access to elected officials ranging from council members and school board members to state legislators and commissioners.
We empower community members to organize on issues they care about. We are a quintessential grassroots community organization that is building the bedrock of the future Democratic Party and the formula for success.
I don't say this because I am Chair. I say this because I have seen what this organization has done over the years. The 34th District Dems are one of the best you'll ever find.
And we aren't looking for folks that will just come in and agree. If you want to make West Seattle a better place to live, then join us and let's work together.
  • Dave
Way to sell out Dan :)
  • Eric
    Go Sabra!
  • Josh Feit
    Hey SJ,
Yes we can. And will. Long list of To Dos on the redesign. Keep the suggestions coming.
  • SJ
hey, can we get the comments numbered again? the icons are cute and all, but numbers would really help folks follow the conversation.
  • Josh Feit
    @7,
    Yes.

    @ westseattlewaiter:

Pay attention, can you? Joe McDermott is running for County Council in the PRIMARY and GENERAL ELECTIONS. Sharon Nelson is running for the State Senate in the PRIMARY and GENERAL ELECTIONS. The people named above would be running for the House in the PRIMARY and GENERAL ELECTIONS. So you're getting what you want, and you didn't even know it.

Once Larry Phillips and his fellow Republicans appointed Jan Drago to the County Council, that eliminated any further appointment process, because Joe stayed put.

I know it's tough for low-information voters to have to get their news from Publicola, where its "reporters" can't explain things clearly, and have no editors. But give it an effort, will you?
  • Fat-tailed
Hugeasscity is great and I'm a reader and all, but isn't having an employee of a huge-ass architectural & planning company reporting on architecture and planning sort of like having a guy who runs a political communications firm writing for you about politics. Oops!
  • Bob
[re: the first "2".] I know Sabra. She's been entrenched in the 34th for a while, she taught at SSCC before moving to King County government and has been steadily increasing her involvement in the precinct while building up professional credentials. She's smart and energetic and I hope she runs!
  • SJ
Bertolet is a stellar addition to an already stellar team. Looking forward to it!
  • West Seattle Waiter
Can we end this sickening revolving chairs of seats in the 34th and elsewhere. This is ridiculous. How about letting the people decide in a primary! Let them talk to real voters, go door to door, raise dollars, build organizations.....Lets not leave another seat to the the nuts in the 34th Democrats or elsewhere to decide. Frankly, I hope their is a real wide open primary for the Council Seat.

What we really need are "placeholders" that won't run for these seats. This is the kind of inside entitlement stuff that got our collective asses kicked in MA. Inside hand to inside hand. And people why the Democratic party establishment is stagnating. Ascension does not create good politicians and its bad for the government too.
  • Alice Roosevelt
    Go, Sabra!!!
  • HugeAssCola will rock.
