[Update: This story was originally posted at 2:20 pm. We've updated it with video interviews from from the Hutchison rally and the Constantine rally across the street.

Editor's note: NARAL spokeswoman Alison Mondi isn't correct when she says Hutchison's Simonyi Fund has contributed to anti-choice causes. However, as we reported in the Fizz this morning, the Stewardship Foundation—where Hutchison is a board member—has contributed $600,000 to anti-choice organizations in recent years.]

Here are some highlights from this afternoon’s “Women for Susan Hutchison” rally at Westlake Center in downtown Seattle.

Walking down Pine from the waterfront, about 15 to 25 upbeat Hutchison supporters lined the north side of the street, waving campaign signs. Hutchison mingled with her fans, offering encouraging words and thanks, and sticking closely to her talking points. Namely, that the rambunctious Constantine supporters, who set up shop across the street, do this for a living, and—addressing Planned Parenthood’s latest anti-Hutchison broadside—asking: what do abortion rights have to do with the King County Executive race anyway?

Generally, her supporters tried to steer the conversation away from reproductive rights and toward what they see as King County’s one party state. “You have a party in power for too long—you’ve got to clean it out,” one woman told me. (That seems to run against Hutchison’s non-partisan pitch.) They also expressed confidence in Hutchison’s ability to staunch what they characterized as a steady flow of businesses from the Puget Sound region, the latest, of course, being Boeing.

The Dow counter-protesters outnumbered Hutchison’s people by almost two to one. The ones I talked to expressed serious concern about Hutchison’s past support of anti-choice candidates and her unwillingness to clearly state where she stands on reproductive rights.

They vehemently disagreed with her position that King County Executive has no effect on a woman’s right to choose, noting that the county provides crucial funds for family planning clinics (which provide abortion referrals, the morning after pill, and birth control for low-income women). They easily drowned out Hutchison’s supporters with persistent pro-Constantine sloganeering.

Hutchison came over to engage with them (a couple TV cameras in tow), but the protesters responded by shouting, “Vote For Dow.”

She turned to the TV cameras to reiterate her point that reproduce rights had nothing to do with the race, calling the controversy “silly.”

Constantine leads Hutchison in the latest KING 5 poll, released this afternoon, 53-43.

Jake: consider topography; "down Pine from the waterfront"?

It doesn't matter what Hutchison did in her previous employment. If a woman voter is going to vote for her just because she's a woman, that'll happen regardless. If a guy wants to vote for a woman to get cred for not being sexist or because he think's she's "spunky" or "fresh", he'll vote for her. If a Republican is not going to vote for a Democrat, then Hutchison gets the vote. If a business type wants to vote for a pro-business candidate, she gets the vote. If a fundamentalist Christian wants to vote for someone who has his/her beliefs, she gets the vote. Even without showing any experience, intelligence, or talent, she gets all those votes. Hopefully Dow can exceed that.

Hutchison sets an extremely bad example to women AND county employees with her poor work ethic.

What woman in this day and age could afford to risk her paycheck, her benefits and her career just to lie about being sick to take a family vacation after her employer denied her time off?
  • simcha
More importantly, what was Susan wearing?
  • sarah68
The "election" is tomorrow. It's way past time to be asking Susan to tell us this, that, and the other thing. She's not going to. Surely you know who you're voting for. If you haven't voted yet, send your damn ballot in so we don't have to wait until Friday to find out who's in.

Why has this campaign come down to who is more pro-choice? It seems to be a fairly shallow issue for a county executive to account for...except if they don't have anything else to run on.

One would think issues like the Howard Hanson Dam, Boeing leaving, or the budget deficit would dominate the discussion. Instead it comes down to litmus test politics.

    So much for change.
  • The first woman interviewed speaks of "this town" and "city" and "state" government. The third woman talks about "this town" being bad for small business. Do they not understand that Hutchison is running for County Executive?

I'm just another "silly" woman who rallied for Dow this afternoon. And yes, Susan, I totally do this for a living, if by "do this for a living" you mean that I will be spending an extra hour at work tonight because by law my job can't pay me for the hour I spent supporting a candidate.

What's silly is denigrating your opponent's supporters because they're good at opposing you. Time to move on to the next talking point.
  • This was such a good article, its unbiased and presents both sides. Even had about equal camera time for both groups. You guys should keep this format.

I wish we could shift the question a bit, to "Do you support finding King County health clinics?" Has Susan Hutchison explicitly answered that one? All I remember off the top of my head is that she cleverly criticized Dow Constantine of endangering the clinics with his reckless budgeting on the Council.
  • silly choices
HA! I'm sure she thinks that being pro-choice is equally as silly as focusing on that issue.

That being said, there are LOTS more reasons for supporting Dow over Susan, and that shouldn't be the only issue women highlight in this race. I don't think it is, but the video portrays it as such.

And @12--my thoughts exactly!!! C'mon, how 'bout some tough questions TeamCola?!
  • Alison Mondi
I did misspeak when I referred to the Charles Simonyi Fund instead of the Stewardship Foundation. I apologize for that slip of the tongue. It is nevertheless true that Susan Hutchison has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-choice, anti-woman organizations. We cannot trust her to protect King County’s 9 family planning service centers with that kind of track record.
  • oh come on!... you got Susan Hutchison on camera and that's all you asked her?! Both are questions that she can only answer one way, of course she's happy with the turnout and of course she's confident about tomorrow.
  • Michael M.
Oh, and I saw Constantine was up 53/43 in the most recent SurveyUSA poll. Can't wait to see the Mayor's race numbers.
  • Michael M.
I was totally there for a while, and my lord, those Bellevue housewives need to learn a thing or two about campaigning, specifically sign waving. They looked so dejected, and as if they weren't sure what they were supposed to do, especially with the Dow supporters chanting and having a merry old time across the street!!!

Of course, this is the same woman who's having her campaign party at the same place as the Yes on 1033 party...need I say more.

Purr is where the business is for election night watch parties, I can tell you that!
  • cvbn
If the issue is so silly, why won't Hutchison answer Planned Parenthood's or NARAL's surveys?
  • irongal
I was at the rally earlier today and was so inspired by to be standing with so many other passionate women. For Susan to call me "silly" feels like a slap to my face and to women's faces all over King County.
  • soriley
@6: Exactly. I was at Westlake this afternoon, too, and was proud to be standing with so many others in support of Dow. Susan's "rally" was a pretty sad in comparison and shows how out of touch she really is.
  • Savi
Dear Susan: I'm a volunteer for Dow, along with many of the other women I personally knew at Westlake earlier today. I'm voting and volunteering for Dow because I know where he stands on the issues - including the issues important to me as a woman. Shame on you for assuming that you can get my vote because I'm a woman. Today's event was organized by your campaign, however we were able to get out more volunteers/voters in support of Dow. That should show you who REALLY represents the rights and values of women and our families in the race for King County Executive . Dow Now!
  • Erick
Sorry Susan - Dow doesn't have to pay people to come out and show their support for him.

He's got an incredible amount of passionate volunteers that want someone in office who isn't afraid to be honest with voters about where they stand on issues.

And writing off people's legitimate concerns about how you would fund health clinics that provide contraceptives as "silly"...

    real classy.
  • Chairman Dao
There were hordes of women at Westlake today??!?

Think of all the inappropriate touching I could have done. Come on Sandeep -- fill me in!

You guys really have to start doing a much better job of proofreading and editing prior to publication. There is some halfway decent journalism in there, but it's hard to get at through the typos and inconsistencies of style that run throughout this blog.
  • IG-88
Why doesn't Susan tell the voters where she stands on women's reproductive rights and eliminate all the doubts about her campaign.
  • TI 83 Plus
    15 - 20 is not half of 25 - 35.

You are apparently as bad at multiplying as you are at spelling the word "asking".
