Snohomish Exec Hawks Energy Drink

This is just plain weird. It appears to be a pitch for an energy drink called Sea 2 0 by Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.

“It gives me the lift without giving me the crash … I refer to Sea 2 0 as the adult oriented in energy drinks … I work out at least once a day, so what I’m put in my body matters..”

I have a call in to Reardon’s office to get an explanation and ask, for starters, if this is a joke or not.

UPDATE: Aaron Reardon called to explain his “testimonial.” First off: He says it’s real. Second, he says, Sea 2 0 is not a campaign contributor nor was he paid for the spot.

Reardon says “as a senior regional elected leader I’ve always promoted local companies.” He’s happy to report that Sea 2 0 is a small minority-owned Bellevue company (it’s owned by an Asian American woman named Nancy Yi) and it has less than 20 employees. “I’m very interested in creating jobs at the local level,” Reardon says. Sea 2 0 started in 2006.

(The name is a play on seaweed—the drink is partially made from seaweed—and Seattle.)

As other examples of supporting local businesses, Reardon says he’s publicly stated that Boeing is the best airplane manufacturer in the world and as a member of the state house in 1999, he says, he signed a letter in support of Microsoft as the anti-trust troubles were brewing.

That is odd…but then, his explanation that public officials frequently sell big business resonates; why can’t they sell small business?

  2. Is he running for Guv? says:

    It’s sooo “I’m the Governater.”

  3. Perv Guy says:

I don’t care what he’s hawking. I just like watching him talk. By far the hunkiest elected official in the region. Woof!

  4. Stinky says:

Um…Bellevue’s not in Snohomish County, dude. Nor is the company being pimped, er, uh, sorry…I guess that would be “promoted”.

Where’s the energy drink for the ambitious pol who wants to do a little “heavy lifting” for the constituents who pay him?

    Just wonderin’…

  5. Mr.Baker says:

They are not paying him (4) and they are a small business (1).

I got that super secret information from reading the story.

  6. Timothy says:

@5 Mr. Baker…I was defending Reardon by suggesting if he does this for a big business, there shouldn’t be a problem doing it for a small business. Perhaps you need to “read” more carefully? ;-)

  7. Josh Feit says:

I should also say, Re: Sea 2 0 not being a donor, Reardon’s assertion checks out at the PDC.

  8. pdcnerd says:

While you were at the PDC…did you happen to check into this?

  9. bhgirl says:

I got a case of that swill from Costco a couple of years ago b/c it was a “natural” and local energy drink. It was disgusting and I gave away the majority of it (felt a little bad about that but can’t throw food out).

  10. Mikos says:

Does Inslee get a shot at Sea 3.0?

  11. Chuck S. says:

I used to drink Sea 2 0 every afternoon for a pick-me-up… now I just watch this video instead. I find its natural blend of megalomania and unintentional comedy very invigorating!

  12. Michael M. says:

    @8 – off topic.

Ahhh, Aaron Reardon. Hailing from the 38th L.D. originally, I do miss being able to look at him regularly (although, he started putting on weight when he got into the State Senate, and even more during the County Exec run…good to hear he’s lost 40 of those unsightly pounds!)

To add insult to injury, Kate is adorable, and their daughter is one of the cutest things, ever! Damn good looking families!!!

  13. Bob Snakely says:

This guy is completely brain dead. We have thousands of people out of work in this county and there are no jobs. Did we really elect this idiot?
