Joe Mallahan and spokeswoman Charla Neuman

Mayoral candidate Joe Mallahan’s campaign just filed its updated campaign-finance reports for August. (Total money raised: $416,179, including more than $230,000 from Mallahan; total spent: $71,390; total cash on hand: -$(that’s negative) 26,782.

Among the biggest expenditures: $4,500 for campaign spokeswoman Charla Neuman (that’s in addition to a $5,000 retainer owed to Argo Strategies, Mallahan’s campaign consultant).

Mallahan himself speaks to the press almost exclusively through Neuman—which is now becoming something of a joke among the press corps. In person, Mallahan  is prone to gaffes misstatements, and retractions, such as his infamous “racial agenda” comments (which he initially denied making, then acknowledged through Neuman, who apologized for Mallahan’s denials) and his awkward performance at last week’s mayoral debate, where he stumbled over basic questions and made frequent outbursts (e.g., “That’s disingenuous!”) while his opponent, Mike McGinn, was speaking.

Neuman’s salary is on the high end for a campaign staffer. (McGinn paid his consulting firm, Mercury Communications, $4,000 in August, but his campaign spokesman is a volunteer). But given how much talking she does compared to the candidate she’s working for, it looks like Mallahan’s getting his money’s worth.

  • She'd be worth $4,500 in a heartbeat if she was any good. The caption for that picture is "Shit, is that more stupid that what I would have said?"

But she's better than McGinn's outfit.

... and it's sort of a running joke among your readers to see how you'll take your daily swipe at Mallahan ...

Maybe Mallahan really is a good business person if he spent such a relatively small sum and ended up one of two who knocked off an incumbent. Sounds like the campaign team isn't paid enough.

Joe might be unpolished, but at least his campaign isn't built around a single disastrous policy idea.

I'll take the bright guy who occasionally puts his foot in his mouth over the one promising a costly, unwinnable fight with Olympia over the viaduct.

Has anyone seen or heard from Mallahan lately? Other than actually showing up for the debate (note to Joe, you might want to prep a tad bit harder for the next one), we haven't heard a peep from Joe, or his campaign, in weeks; what the heck is he doing? McGinn seems to drop a new idea or plan every day, while Joe does, well, nothing. Weird.

    HUH?

Hyeok Kim says I should have that picture framed. But she wants to be clear, she only endorses me as a friend, not as a candidate.

Erica resents women who earn more than her as reporters or spokeswomen. Public records show that Erica earned about $157.69 every two weeks at The Stranger in July, 2007.

There's no way that $4500/month should be considered "high" for a campaign manager (she is more than a spokesperson, right?). It's an all-in job, short-term. $54k/year for that amount of work should not be considered exorbitant.

And, it's likely not fair to compare it to McGinn's campaign; which is a phenomenon. While I give props to McGinn for being able to pull that off, I don't want the precedent to continue to be that people should work in politics for nothing. People should get paid for their work.

-$26,782, now that's some effective management; let's hope that Joe runs our City government better than he runs his campaign.
