1. This morning’s first Fizz item is about PubliCola. Big news here today:

We’re announcing that Rajeev Singh, president and COO of Concur Technologies (NASDAQ: CNQR), is  buying a stake in PubliCola. Along with Urban Visions head Greg Smith, Singh is now PubliCola’s second major investor.

If you want to know about Concur, you should check out last Sunday’s Seattle Times where the Redmond-based automated travel management company was ranked the 12th best-performing company in the Pacific Northwest on the Times’ list of this region’s 87 top public firms. And  BusinessWeek put Concur on its list of  “Top 100 small companies to watch” in 2007. Good pick. Concur grew from $129 million revenues in ’07 to $215 million in 2008.

Singh, who cofounded Concur in 1993, is making a personal investment in PubliCola that will have no impact on the operations of Concur.

On the PubliCola side, I’m still the editor and majority owner—PubliCola’s other owners don’t have editorial or management control of the day-to-day operation of the site. But I’m happy to report that Singh will join PubliCola’s advisory board where his entrepreneurial and tech brain power will be invaluable.  And he will definitely be involved in our strategic decision making about how we want PubliCola to evolve.

 2. You have to figure that in the battle between the four Democrats vying for King County Executive, Eastsiders Ross Hunter and Fred Jarret are going to divvy up the endorsements in the Microsoft suburbs while city slickers Dow Constantine and Larry Phillips are going to get the nods from Seattle’s neighborhoods, like South Seattle’s 37th District, which dual endorsed the pair last week.

For all of them that means getting the support of the rural, big box, and strip mall turf of in South King County could tip the scales. Larry Phillips scored big last month when he picked up the sole endorsement of South King County’s 31st District Democrats—around Enumclaw.

However, Constantine evened the score last night. Constantine picked up the sole endorsement of the 33rd—the district that takes in Kent, Des Moines, Normandy Park and Sea-Tac.

Constantine and Phillips already split the 47th—SouthEast King County from Renton to Black Diamond.

That leaves the 11th District around Burien, Sea-Tac, Tukwila and Renton, the 30th around Federal Way, and the 5th—North Bend, Snoqualmie, and Issaquah.

(P.S. While the fight over South King County is key,  there’s also some fun battles still brewing in Seattle’s 36th, 43rd, and 46th Districts.)

 3. Speaking of the 33rd District—State Senator Karen Keiser (D-33, Kent) is off to D.C. today (as we reported yesterday) to be recognized for her work on health care reform.

However, Keiser will also be part of a delegation of state-level lawmakers from around the country that will hold a press conference with U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) urging President Obama to pass a health care reform bill within the year—a bill that sounds a lot like the one Obama already endorsed that includes a “Public Option Plan” for a government health care option.

4. What is it, 1975? What am I, on Angel Dust? I don’t know, but just like last week, when I recommended an article in Rolling Stone magazine (about the estate tax), today I’m recommending a piece in the latest ish of RS, man. It’s an article about how President Obama says he’s ending the drug war, but he’s really not. The article stars former Seattle Police Chief  Gil Kerlikowske—now Obama’s Drug Czar.

  • Congratylations Josh on yr new investor! Now's the time to drop the "nerd" appelations of the columnists and let 'em be full-on regular opinionators.
  • And, for the record, the 43rd has essentially zero history of doing early endorsements for any offices, irrespective of incumbency/open.
  • Jeff
@5 I'm in the 36th Dems and I think Larry has it in the bag. We don't have a history of doing early endorsements in open seats and we like our extensive interview process (18 hours of candidate interviews over 2 weeks.)

The fact the 36th hasn't endorsed yet should not be interpreted as lack of support for Larry Phillips.

What did I miss here? You were reporting the primary as a race for Democrat endorsements and yet, the battle is non-partisan (or supposedly so). Aren't the Republicans worth any endorsements? They vote, too.

Reminds me of one of my Democrat mentors who saw my signs up. He asked why aren't there any over here? They vote, too. My weak response was their weren't many voters over there. Well, the other guy had that area wrapped up and won. Think about it.
  • Congratulations on the financing from Rajeev Singh. This is an encouraging sign for the evolution of online journalism in Seattle.

I am sure you are well aware of the potential problems. I think the potential problems are sometimes subtle, sometimes subconscious, and all easily justified.

My point is while I recognize the convergence of conflicting interests and a necessary evil, I do not believe you should have as a prime sponsor be included in the subject you are directly reporting on.

It would be like Morning Joe brought to you by Starbucks doing a story on fair trade coffee.

I am sure will be diligent in your pursuit of objectivity but I feel it necessary to tell you it is impossible.
  • The 36th is entirely within Phillips's Council district.

Here in the 43rd, we're basically split between the two Larrys, though more in Gossett's than Phillips's. We also have one precinct apiece in Ferguson's and Constantine's Council districts.

Tonight is the endorsement meeting for the 43rd.
  • Ian
Don't forget the 45th! We had quite the round-robin last Wednesday as people jockeyed to get enough support for various candidates and/or pairings of candidates.
  • Danny,

Thanks for keeping an eye on us. It's a good point, and we're aware of the potential for problems.

If you've liked our coverage so far, I don't think you have anything to worry about, but again, let us know if you see a problem.

This is the first Morning Fizz "brought to you by _____" that I've seen. Great idea. But my question is why does the first one have to be a clear illustration of the conflict of media outlets and ad buying power of the campaigns that they are supposed to be objectively covering?

It's hard to speak the truth about someone/something when they contribute to your meal ticket. I recognize that campaigns have the right to buy ad space/time and publicola has the right to make profits but there has to be some sort of delicate balance. And today is clear example not practicing that principle.

I hope this isn't a slippery slope for the fizz and publicola.
  • @4,

I imagine Phillips will get the 36th, but I certainly wonder why Phillips hasn't already gotten the early endorse there. (Constantine got the early endorse in his district, the 34th).

It makes me think there could be a mini battle brewing. Just speculation on my part.

Morning Fizz, caffeinated news and ... gossip.
  • Seattle Consensus
    #2: Josh --

Why is there a battle in the 36th? Isn't that district almost co-terminus with Phillips' council district? I thought they would have given him an early endorsement.
  • @2,

Sorry. I had the Fighting 5th on the list in my notebook and then inadvertently left you guys out of the post.

    I'll fix that.
  • fredster
Don't forget the 5th district which will endorse on wednesday night- not a game changer but still an endorsement
  • About #1--wow. Appears you're quite serious about this as a business. Good on you. At least I can say I was hanging around here when it was just a shit-ass, puffed-up little news blog purporting to usurp the role of old media in the new. I don't always agree with Publicola and think most of the other commenters are retarded, one-note anti-Nickels assholes ;-), but I like it here. Don't forget where you came from on your way up.
