The Seattle Times’ Joni Balter got the scoop. Balter reports:
Steinbrueck will be spending the first of the next four years in Cambridge, Mass. He landed a prestigous urban design fellowship at Harvard University, as he says, “researching the politics, principles and plan for urban sustainability of U.S. cities.”
Team Nickels has to be psyched. Steinbrueck was the one candidate who could have stitched together the perfect Seattle coalition that represented both the old-school neighborhood Seattle that continues to sway elections and the new urban/techie Greens who are starting to impact local politics.

what if Licata ran?
Licata is a hero to the old-school neighborhood bloc (and he’s certainly a super star on the left), but he doesn’t connect with the folks in the second part of that magic electoral equation—the urban Greens. You might also call them yuppies.
Seattle is now about as much a democracy as is Venezuela. Nicles has created a machine that is impressive if you are comfortable with his directions. On the other hand, the history of oligarchies teaches us that they fall prey to ego and corruption.
We badly need some strong candidates for City Council to create a balance. Otherwise .. with time, Nickles may beign to look like the dear leader of North Korea!
For those of you who are dissapointed that Peter’s not running, I suggest that you take the time to get to know Michael McGinn, you will like what you discover. He has a positive vision, experience working with diverse coalitions to achieve results and a real determination to improve the future of our city.
Who gives a shit?
for once i agree with Mr c. — really — in this time of bust and hunger — who gives a shit?
oh, the yuppie greens
Great article about running. Thank you!
